Fans Turn Out In Force To Give Law A Deserved Send Off

On Tuesday afternoon, it was a sad day for those involved in the beautiful game as family, fans and footballers of all generations came together to pay tribute to Scotland and Manchester United legend Denis Law.

Last month, following the announcement of his tragic death at the age of 84, around 750 mourners attended his funeral at Manchester Cathedral to pay their final respects to one of the greatest players in football history. The term “GOAT” (Greatest Player of All Time) is thrown around a lot in modern football, but when we’re talking about the calibre and talent of a player like Law, the title is well deserved.

More than 1,000 fans gathered at Old Trafford, lining the streets to applaud as his funeral procession passed through the stadium and taking a moment to pause in front of the Trinity statue, where he is forever etched in Red Devils history alongside fellow Reds legends Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best.

For fans with some experience, there is absolutely no need for an introduction to the enforcer and what he was able to create on the hallowed turf, while many less experienced fans will know of his talents from their parents, family members or grandparents, but for those discovering his skills for the first time, all you need to know is that he is the only Scotsman to be named the best player in the world and to win the Ballon d’Or.

It was by no means his only success in the game, as he won 55 caps for Scotland, scoring 30 goals, and he also played a major role in Manchester United’s trophy-laden run during the 1960s – two First Division titles, an FA Cup, two FA Charity Shields and the historic European Cup.

Football stars past and present attended his funeral to pay tribute to the great man, as did his former colleagues Joe Corrigan and Mike Summerby, who made two appearances for City during his career.

Of all the praise that has been given to him and his career and all the achievements and successes that he has had, many would simply argue that Brazilian superstar Pele summed it up best.

When asked if there was any English player who would like to join that excellent Brazilian team, he replied Denis Law.

That was high praise indeed, and a great compliment to the little man—few who had seen him in full concentration would have disagreed.
