Liverpool tried twice to renew Luis Diaz before selling him to Bayern Munich
Liverpool website This is Anfield has collected reports suggesting Liverpool Football Club tried to renew Luis Diaz’s contract before ultimately selling him to Bayern Munich:
“It is understood that there was an insurmountable gap between the offer Liverpool had made and what Diaz’s agents were asking for,” Joyce explained.
Meanwhile, Paul Gorst of The Echo added that the club was “in no rush to negotiate” and that “this stance has led to frustration within Diaz’s team”. The 28-year-old has two years left on his Anfield contract and is on around £140,000-a-week, significantly more than the £55,000 previously claimed. For comparison, the likes of Dominic Soboslai, Alexis McAllister, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa are believed to be on similar weekly wages.
Throughout the process, Liverpool had little discussion about trying to keep Diaz. However, it is now a done deal as the Colombian is expected to sign for Bayern Munich in the coming hours.
Liverpool tried twice to renew Luis Diaz’s contract before he agreed a £65.6m move to Bayern Munich this summer. On Sunday, the 28-year-old officially reached an agreement with Bayern Munich to swap the Colombian for the Allianz Arena from Anfield, with Bayern accepting an offer of €75m (£65.6m). However, The Times’ Paul Joyce and others subsequently reported that Liverpool had tried twice to renew Diaz’s contract, but both attempts failed.
