Manchester United Still in the Fight for Donnarumma

The Red Devils enjoyed a fruitful transfer window, signing three impressive players. Mateus Cunha initially joined the club, and they later announced the arrivals of Diego Leão and Bryan Mbemo.

More signings are expected in the coming weeks, with L’Equipe suggesting Manchester United could compete with Manchester City for Donnarumma, who has been reluctant to renew his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG is currently close to completing the signing of Lucas Chevalier from Lille. The 23-year-old’s arrival could pave the way for a departure for Donnarumma, who is entering the final year of his contract.

World Class

Manchester United had a dismal run in the 2024/25 Premier League season, finishing 15th with just 42 points. They lacked offensive firepower, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee combining for just seven goals.

However, the club also has problems with its goalkeeping. Andre Onana has made three errors leading to goals in the English top flight. He also made several errors in the Europa League.

Onana is currently recovering from a hamstring injury but is expected to return in early August. Manchester United may consider selling him to bring in one of the world’s top goalkeepers, Donnarumma.

The Italian player, hailed as “world-class” by The Athletic, appears poised to leave Paris Saint-Germain amid a contract impasse. His value on Transfermarkt is £34 million, which would represent a significant bargain for the Red Devils.

He may not possess Onana’s ball-handling ability, but he excels in other areas. He is quick, capable of controlling the penalty area, and capable of executing difficult passes. Onana has been criticized for his reluctance to respond to corners and set-pieces.

Manchester City is close to signing James Trafford to a new contract with Burnley, and they may not be able to compete with Manchester United for Donnarumma. Whether the deal can be reached still depends on whether the Red Devils can find a suitable buyer and a reasonable transfer fee.
