Newcastle £15m short, make new bid for ‘special’ target, star won’t ask for transfer

Oliver Glasner’s side made it clear from the start that Newcastle United would have to break their transfer record to lure the former Chelsea centre-back to St James’ Park.

And, having rejected two offers from Tyneside, Palace are still holding on to that stance.

HITC can confirm Newcastle’s second offer – worth just over £50m – has been rejected. Crystal Palace want at least £65m, meaning Eddie Howe’s side are still well below the desired fee.

The fee would make Mark Guhay the most expensive signing in Newcastle’s history. Currently, Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali – brought in from Real Sociedad and AC Milan for £60m respectively – share custody of such a label.

Crystal Palace reject Newcastle’s second bid for Marc Gueye

Newcastle United continue to fight hard.

Their new sporting director Paul Mitchell has been driving talks with Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish and director Dougie Friedman, who has also recently been on the Magpies’ wish list.

But while Guehi is open to a move – which would see him play European football for the first time – the 24-year-old, who was born in Ivory Coast, accepts Palace’s stance. He will not be in a rush to leave the club that gave him a Premier League chance.

However, the palace leaves nothing to chance. The south London side are on the lookout for potential replacements should Newcastle choose to meet their demands after Michael Ollis lost to Bayern Munich.

These include Trevoh Chalobah – who has fallen out of favor at Chelsea and is up for sale – and Wolfsburg’s Maxence Lacroix.

Lacroix has just one year left on his contract with the Bundesliga side. Like Daichi Kamada, who signed on a free transfer from Lazio, he worked with Glasner in Germany.

Lacroix, once worth £25million, also admitted he maintains a close relationship with his former Frankfurt boss and had spoken to him after Crystal Palace’s heroic 1-0 win over Liverpool in the spring.
